Ashurst to guide Taiwan’s first offshore cable factory

Ashurst has advised the Taiwanese cable company Walsin Lihwa while establishing a joint venture with a Danish cable giant NKT HV Cables AB to manufacture the first subsea cable for providing repeated offshore power in Taiwan. In this deal, NKT will provide expertise and technical support for the construction, whereas Walsin would contribute to capital, the technology which will be transferred by NKT is the latest of all the offshore power sources in the cable industry in Taiwan.

The team for Ashurst was led by the Asian Head of corporate transactions, Joshua Cole in Hong Kong with the support of partner Michelle Phang and counsel Lisa Hui in Singapore, as well as senior associate Sean Ching and associates Kim Do Yeon and Jessica Leung in Hong Kong. Walsin Lihwa was established in 1966 and has been listed on the Taiwan stock exchange since 1972.

NKT is a leading supplier of power cable solutions that include high-voltage offshore cable systems that are developed and manufactured at NKT’s facilities in Europe, which possess leading technologies in offshore wind farms that hold extensive experience in developing submarine cable manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.
